2021 ICC Building Codes First Round Hearings Results

The 2021 International Code Council (ICC) code development process kicked off last month with the Committee Action Hearings focusing on building and fire codes. The BOMA International codes team attended the hearings to ensure that the interests of commercial real estate were well represented.

Going into the hearing, BOMA's codes team had identified 155 code proposals most important to the commercial real estate industry and determined whether or not to support or oppose each proposed code change. Of the 155, 115 ended up favorable to BOMA’s positions. With the first round of hearings now complete, BOMA International’s Building Codes and Voluntary Standards Committee will be reviewing the results from the first round and developing public comments to be submitted in August before the final action hearings, known as the Public Comment Hearings, taking place in September. These hearings will establish the final provisions that will make up the 2021 building and fire codes. Building Codes and Voluntary Standards Committee Chair Kevin Clark encourages BOMA members to participate in the review and public comment development process.
