Florida DBPR - Elevator Industry Notices

Attention Interested Parties,

The Bureau of Elevator Safety has been made aware of three issues that will affect elevator communications in Florida.  The following information is provided so that the industry may take the appropriate action to remain in compliance with existing regulations.  For specific questions regarding the information below, please contact your local service provider, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) at https://nationalnanpa.com/index.html, or the Florida Public Service Commission at www.floridapsc.com.  The main reasons for immediate actions in Florida are:

  •  FCC Order (FCC 20-100) - A recent Federal Communications Commission order established 988 as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.  This change will result in mandatory 10-digit local dialing for all customers in the Florida 321 (Brevard County only), 352, 561, and 941 area codes beginning October 24, 2021.
  • Area Code 448 to Overlay Florida 850 Area Code (NANPA Notice PL-551) -An additional area code is being added to the Panhandle area due to limited phone number availability.  Among other changes, this new area code will result in mandatory 10-digit dialing beginning May 22, 2021.
  • Area Code 656 to Overlay Florida 813 Area Code (PDF) - An additional area code is being added to the area currently served by area code 813.  Among other changes, this new area code will result in mandatory 10-digit dialing on January 22, 2022.
